TanzaAfya Youth Health Initiative (Dodoma)
TanzaAfya is a youth-focused sexual and reproductive health initiative implemented in Dodoma Region. Running from July 2023 to June 2025 with support from the French Embassy and partners, this project aimed to reduce adolescent maternal mortality and improve young people’s health outcomes. TanzaAfya empowers adolescents aged 10–24 with knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. We work in secondary schools and communities to provide age-appropriate education on topics like puberty, family planning, HIV prevention, and gender-based violence.
A key feature of TanzaAfya is creating youth-friendly healthcare services. DMF has helped train health workers and set up dedicated youth corners or weekend clinics where young people can seek advice and care without stigma. The project also actively involves community and religious leaders through dialogues that address cultural taboos and promote gender equality. By the project’s end, tens of thousands of teens, both in school and out of school, participated in TanzaAfya activities. Beyond direct education, DMF uses evidence and success stories from TanzaAfya to advocate nationally for stronger adolescent health policies.
Already, TanzaAfya has transformed lives by equipping youth with accurate information, fostering open conversations about reproductive health, and linking young mothers to safe maternity care. This comprehensive approach contributes to lower teen pregnancy complications, reduced HIV infections, and empowered youth who can advocate for their rights and health needs.
